Chapter 1: The Science of Biology

Quarter: 1st

NGSS:

HSETS12.

Design a solution to a complex real-world problem by breaking it down into smaller, more manageable problems that can be solved through engineering.

All other standards in this chapter will not be assessed to mastery.  Specific standards will be covered in individual chapters.

    • 1-1  What is Science

     • 1-2  How Scientists Work

     • 1-3  Studying Life

     • 1-4  Tools and Procedures

Chapter 2: The Chemistry of Life

Quarter: 1st

NGSS:

LS1.C Organization for Matter and Energy Flow in Organisms

2 The sugar molecules thus formed contain carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen: their hydrocarbon

backbones are used to make amino acids and other carbon-based molecules that can be assembled

into larger molecules (such as proteins or DNA), used for example to form new cells.

3 As matter and energy flow through different organizational levels of living systems, chemical

elements are recombined in different ways to form different products.

Possible Sections Covered:

     • 2-1  The Nature of Matter

     • 2-2  Properties of Water

     • 2-3  Carbon Compounds

     • 2-4  Chemical Reactions and Enzyme

Possible Homework:

     Notes to use on Quiz:  2-1, 2-2, 2-3, 2-4

     Section Reviews: 2-1, 2-2, 2-3, 2-4

Worksheets: Atomic Structure, Counting Atoms, Balancing Equations, More Balancing Equations

Possible Laboratories:

Identifying Organic Compounds Lab

Vocabulary:

Possible Assessments:

Class work/ Guided Practice - Formative

Homework – Formative/Summative

Note Quizzes – Formative

Pop Quizzes – Formative/Summative

Laboratory – Summative

Test - Summative

Chapter 7: Cell Structure and Function

Quarter: 1st

NGSS:

LS1.A: Structure and Function

1 Systems of specialized cells within organisms help them perform the essential functions of life.

3 Multicellular organisms have a hierarchical structural organization, in which any one system is made

up of numerous parts and is itself a component of the next level.

Possible Sections Covered:

     • 7-1 Life is Cellular

     • 7-2 Cell Structures

     • 7-3 Movement Through the Membrane

     • 7-4 The Diversity of Cellular Life

Possible Homework:

     Notes to use on Quiz:  7-1, 7-2, 7-3, 7-4

     Section Reviews: 7-1, 7-2, 7-3, 7-4
